ASIC is making a crucial change that will impact businesses trading in Australia: The phased removal of trading names from the Australian Business Register (ABR).
ASICs Removal of Trading Names What business owners need to know

This transition, aimed at simplifying business registrations and improving transparency, began in May 2012, when the ABR ceased collecting and updating trading names, shifting its focus to registered business names.

Trading Name vs Business Name

The key difference between trading names and business names lies in their legal status:

  • Trading Name: An informal name a business may use without official registration. It holds no legal standing with ASIC.
  • Business Name: The legally registered name under which a business operates. It must be registered with ASIC, ensuring name availability and compliance with regulatory requirements.

What This Means for Your Business

From 1 November 2025, ABN Lookup will only display registered business names, meaning trading names will no longer be visible. If your business relies solely on a trading name, this change could present challenges:

  • Credibility: Without a registered business name, your business may lose visibility and trust on ABN Lookup.
  • Lost Opportunities: Clients and partners may struggle to verify your business, affecting potential growth and networking.

Secure Your Business Name Today

To avoid losing your trading name, we strongly recommend registering it as a business name with ASIC before 31 October 2025. Without registration, others may claim and use the name, leading to brand confusion and legal risks.
